Deutsch: Schortens führt in Rechtsnachfolge das Wappen der 1948 aufgelösten Gemeinde Oestringen fort, genehmigt durch den Niedersächsischen Minister des Innern 1949. Im Mittelalter war Schortens Sitz der damals weltberühmten Pferdezucht der Oestringer. Aus dieser Zeit stammt auch das Wappen der Stadt, welches, ähnlich wie das niedersächsische Wappen, ein springendes Pferd enthält. Pferde spielten in der weiteren Geschichte der Stadt immer eine bedeutende Rolle. So soll es ein Wunderpferd des Jürgen Schemering auf dem Gut des Klosters Oestringfelde gegeben haben, mit welchem der Eigentümer Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts durch ganz Europa reiste. Die 1955 vom Minister des Innern genehmigte Gemeindeflagge ist rot, weiß, rot mit dem Wappen in der Mitte.
English: The arms were originally granted to the municipality of Oestringen, and continued in 1949 by Schortens. The horse is a symbol for the formerly important horse breeding in the area. The horses bred in the area were very famous and even exported to France. In 1707 a very famous horse was bred in the Östringfelde Estate, and a silver medal was struck in honour of the horse. The colours are opposite to the colours of the arms of the State of Lower Saxony.[1]
