A szabványban meghatározott nyelvkódokat részint bibliográfiai célokra, számítógépes és internetes környezetben pedig a helyi adat (locale data) kulcselemeként használják. E nyelvkódokat tartalmazza a [[Wikipédia]] egyes nyelvváltozatainak [[URL|url]]-előtagja is (pl. a ''hu.wikipedia.org'' a magyar, az ''en.wikipedia.org'' az angol, az ''es.wikipedia.org'' a spanyol változatot jelenti).
