[[1767]]-ben a parlament kiadta a Townshedi törvényt, ami minden amerikai területre behozott árura adót vetett ki. A ''Liberty''-t, John Hancock hajóját csempészettel vádolták, és a bostoni helyőrség [[1768]]. [[június 10.|június 10-én]] lefoglalta. [[1768]] októberében megérkezett a brit erősítés. A tüntetések ettől függetlenül nem csitultak, sőt, inkább felerősödtek. A nagy stressznek kitett brit helyőrség hirtelen belelőtt a tömegbe, ami öt ember halálát okozta.
== Következmény ==
A hazafi [[Samuel Adams]] ezt kihasználva tovább feszítette a húrt a britek és a kolóniák közti kapcsolatban. Az ellenállás valamelyest legyengült, amikor [[1770]]-ben a brit parlament az adók nagy részét megszüntette. Csak a teán maradt adó, amit a hazafiak még mindig elleneztek, mondván, hogy csak a saját képviselőjük szabhat ki adókat. A gyarmatok azonban nem bírtak képviselőkkel a brit parlamentben.
