Gates karrierjét 2007-ben a helyi Dead Game lemezkiadónál kezdte. A 2000-es évek közepén karrierje kibontakozását jelenthették volna Baton Rouge-i barátai Boosie Badazz és Webbie. 2007-ben megjelent első promóciós dalát két barátjával közösen Pick of Da Litter néven készítette el. Egy másik promóciós céllal készült dala a 2008-ban megjelent All or Nuthin, amit Gates úgy jellemzett, "sok szenvedés...sok igaz történet". 2008-ban Gates és Boosie különváltak, ami felfüggesztette Gates zenei karrierjét. 31 hónapot töltött börtönben 2008 és 2011 között. Ez idő alatt mesterképzést végzett pszichológiából egy börtönprogram keretében. Jó cselekedete miatt azonban hamarosan szabadulhatott a börtönből.

2007–2012: Early career, setbacks, and Young Money
Gates began his career in 2007 by signing to local label Dead Game Records his career would blossom along with fellow Baton Rouge natives Boosie Badazz and Webbie in the mid-2000s. The three collaborated on Gates' first mixtape, Pick of Da Litter, in 2007. Another mixtape, All or Nuthin, was released in 2008 and featured what Gates described as "a lot of pain...a lot of true stories." In 2008, both Gates and Boosie were incarcerated in separate cases, effectively pausing Gates' music career. He spent 31 months in prison between 2008 and 2011. During this time, he earned a master's degree in psychology through a prison program. He was released early from prison for good behavior.
A börtönben töltött évei után Gates ismét zenei munkába fogott. 2012-ben a Make 'Em Believe című dal sikert hozott számára. Szintén népszerűségre tett szert Lil Wayne lemezkiadójánál a Young Money Entertainment-nél.
