The name comes from the words νέος/''neos'' meaning "new" and δῆμος/''dêmos'' meaning "deme or territory". As opposed to what reported [[Hesychius of Alexandria]], whoapproached the neodamodes and the [[demotes]] (citizens of the [[deme]]) [[athenians]], it did not acquired full citizenship. The suffix -ωδης (''-ôdês'') marked only one resemblance. In effect, the deme rejoined its only that of the [[Perioikoi]].
