Inhabitants of Split swear that their cathedral is named after St.Domnius - the bishop of Salona tortured and killed under Diocletian; actually only the bell tower is named after him. The church is named after St. Maria – the Virgin Mary. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius is the oldest cathedral in the world.[ The bell tower was built in a narrow space between the cathedral (mausoleum) and the Peristyle in late 13th or early 14th century. During reconstruction in the 19th century the bell-tower was radically transformed, and many of the original romanesque sculptures were removed. The building of the bell tower started in the first half of the 13th century and lasted for more than 300 years. The bell tower was completely restored (1890-1906). Its height is 60 meters (197 ft). |
