*"Taking the dragon for a representation of the devil (drac in Romanian), the people of Wallachia gave Vlad II the surname Dracu (Dracul being the grammatically correct form), which he seems to have accepted and used. His son Vlad III would later use in several documents the surname Drăculea, which was interpreted as "son of the Devil/son of the Dragon", although it might simply be a shorter way of putting "the-son-of-that-prince-that-was-called-Dracu". Through various translations (Draculea, Drakulya) Vlad III eventually came to be known as Dracula."
