erfashionable places of summer resort, and the races atthe beautiful village of Havre-de-Grace on the Sus-quehanna. 195 BALTIMORE In the Federal Gazette of Tuesday, December 27,1803, is the following: Married on Saturday evening last by the ReverendBishop Carroll Mr. Jerome Bonaparte, youngest brotherof the First Consul of the French Republic to MissElizabeth Patterson eldest daughter of William Pat-terson of this city. In a letter dated at New York September 5th, 1804,addressed to her father William Patterson, Baltimore,Maryland, Mrs. Bonaparte writes: We have made a journey here for nothing, as Gen-eral Armstrong, the Ambassador, after writing to Mr.Bonaparte that he would be delighted at taking me toFrance with him, changed his mind and went off with-out me. To-morrow we are to leave this place forPhiladelphia and from thence we go to Springfield(Maryland) immediately. Jerome Bonaparte with his bride visited West Brook-iield this same year (1804), and probably on this sametrip. 196

She returned in Novemberand her son accompanied her (from Lancaster, nearFitchburg) to Hartford, where she took the steamerfor New York on her way to Baltimore. The routewas undoubtedly through Springfield, as this was theregular highway. Miss Elizabeth Patterson, after her marriage in1803, called herself Mrs. Jerome Bonaparte until sheobtained a divorce from the Legislature of Marylandin 1814 with permission to resume her maiden name.From that time onward she always signed herselfElizabeth Patterson, but was very generally knownand rather frequently addressed as MadameBonaparte. 197 Note.—Probably the best account published of theBonaparte-Patterson episode is to
