Gambles brigade ex-tended the line to the left as far as the Hagerstownroad, his first line being along the banks of Wil-loughby Run. Those early morning hours to Bu-ford were full of anxiety. Would Reynolds arrivebefore his little cavalry command would be sweptaway by Hills advance? The signal officer in theSeminary tower at length discovered the approachof Reynolds columns, and, not long after, Rey-nolds himself, having hastened thitherward inadvance of his troops, met Buford at ^he signalstation and received from him a statement as to thesituation in his front.
