A Pristimantis-fajok a békák egyik legnagyobb nemét képezik. Nemrégen ez a békanem arról vált híressé, hogy egyikük, a Pristimantis mutabilis képes megváltoztatni bőrének szerkezetét, felületét a dudorosból simára, vagy fordítva; és ezt csak néhány percen belül.[1]

Ezek a békák Dél- és Közép-Amerikában, valamint a Karib-térség déli részén fordulnak elő. Főleg hegyvidéki, esőerdei fákon élő békák.

Az idetartozó fajokat sokáig az Eleutherodactylus nembe sorolták be; ez a békanem pedig korábban a füttyentőbéka-félék (Leptodactylidae) családjának volt a része. A mai rendszertani besorolásuk vitatott. Az egyik rendszerezés szerint a Strabomantidae családon belül a Strabomantinae alcsalád neme, míg a másik elképzelés szerint a Craugastoridae családba tartoznak, azon belül pedig a Ceuthomantinae nevű alcsalád részei lennének.[2][3][4]
