Pályája

Eleinte patikus volt Nottinghamben, aztán sokat utazott, főképp Németországban, végül pedig a spiritizmus felé fordult. Írt novellákat, művelődéstörténelmi és archeológiai munkákat, regényt. Neje Mary Howitt (leánynevén Botham) angol írónő volt, akivel 1821. április 16-án kötött házasságot.
