Zoltán Balázs (actor and director) szerkesztés

Zoltán Balázs (Cluj, July 3, 1977 –) Jászai Mari Award-winning Hungarian actor, director, scenographer, theater director. He is one of the most versatile and original figures in the Hungarian and international theater world[1][2], a theatrical innovator with his own creative method, whose name is associated with a series of emblematic acting performances and productions[3].

Early life and career szerkesztés

Zoltán Balázs was born in 1977 in Cluj, Romania. In 1989 he moved to Hungary. Between 1989-1991 he was a member of the Budapest Children's Dance Theatre. He attended Horváth Mihály High School’s drama class of 1991-1995 in Szentes. From 1995 to 1998 Balázs was a student of the National Academy of Theater. He studied Acting (1998-2002) and Directing (2000-2003) in Budapest at the University of Theatre and Film Arts. Meanwhile he participated in several workshops with world-famous directors and choreographers, such as Anatoli Vasiliev, Josef Nadj and Min Tanaka in Avignon, and studied from Robert Wilson in Paris[4]. Then he completed the directing course of The Union of European Theatres in Stuttgart. In 2001 he founded the avant-garde Maladype Theatre in Budapest[5], which became internationally famous in a short time and was sought after in many places, of which he has been the artistic director and director ever since. Between 2003-2008 he was a cutting-edge artist of the Bárka Theatre[6], a defining actor and director of the company. Not only with his own ensemble, but also as a director, Balázs is a frequent guest of various festivals and theaters around the world[7]. He has already directed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, Germany, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and the United States of America. [8]

He applied his conceptual and method-based theatrical thinking in many genres and styles with great success; he directed classical and contemporary works, adapted novels and epics, dreamed up dramas, comedies, operas, operettas, musicals, dance plays, puppet shows, performances, non-verbal and physical theater, as well as rock concerts.[9]

He taught acting at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest, and the University of Arts Târgu-Mureş. He regularly holds master classes and workshops based on his theater methodical concept entitled Golden-Bug- and FIVE GATES Method[10][11] for students of Hungarian and foreign art universities and theater communities. [12]

“Balázs is a visionary director whose works are on the verge of irreality, between dream and reality.”- Péter Molnár Gál.  His directions do not conform to fashions, avoids clichés, mannerisms and conditionings. His productions, which are inspired by different cultures and theater traditions, are surrounded by great attention all over the world.[13] His many-sided artistic work and his performances experimenting with new theatrical language have been honored with many theater and state awards.[14][15][16]

Through his all-art shows he aims to give the audience a theatrical experience which is complex, appeals to emotions and senses and raises the scenery, motion and music to the same level as the lyrics. The aim of Zoltán Balázs’s method - uniquely developed for training actors - is to develop the techniques for movement, dialogue and enhance the sense of body through self-examination.[17]

He focuses on the actors’ intensive joint work and continuous communication with the audience. Therefore the importance to improve the actors’ analytical and synthesizing skills, the everyday tone of their speech, and the constant condition of the improvisation based play that gives immediate and spirited reaction to the audience is inevitable.[1]
